چکیده

The wide-spread occurrence of ergothioneine in animals (l-3) suggests that the compound is either synthesized by several animal species or is present in common foodstuffs. However, data in the literature on this point are equivocal and contradictory. Eagles and Vars (4) suggested that the corn protein, zein, contains 2-thiolhistidine which serves as a dietary precursor of ergothioneine. Repeated attempts by other workers to identify thiolhistidine as a constituent of corn have failed (5-7). The conclusion of Potter and Franke (8) that corn-containing diets lead to increased blood ergothioneine levels in rats, and the similar conclusion of Eagles and Vars with regard to pigs, could not be confirmed by Hunter (6). Consideration of the structure of ergothioneine (I) suggests as likely

On the origin of animal ergothioneine.

Studies in this Laboratory with isotope-labeled compounds have given no evidence for the synthesis of ergothioneine by the rat, chicken, guinea pig, or human (1). On the other hand Heath and coworkers (2) have concluded from similar experiments that the boar does synthesize ergothioneine. We now report the results of studies on a young pig, in which we find no evidence for ergothioneine synthes...

The occurrence of ergothioneine in plant material.

The question of the synthesis of ergothioneine by animals has been investigated in this Laboratory by the administration of isotope-labeled compounds considered to be likely precursors. No evidence for the formation of radioactive ergothioneine was obtained with C14-histidine in the rat, methyl-labeled C14-methionine in the rat or chicken, S35-methionine in the rat, guinea pig, or pig, and S35-...

Reproductive safety evaluation of L-Ergothioneine.

L-Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring histidine-derived betaine (CAS No: 497-30-3) synthesized by bacteria and fungi, and found ubiquitously in plants and animals. It is present in many human foodstuffs. We evaluated the potential reproductive toxicity of L-Ergothioneine in Sprague-Dawley rats. L-Ergothioneine was administered at concentrations of 0.1, 0.3 or 0.9% in diet to F0 males (for 10...

Estimation of ergothioneine in urine, blood and organs by determination of the alkaline perhydrol-labile sulfur.

Behre and Benedict(1) developed a procedure for the determination of ergothioneine by its reaction with a phosphotungstic acid reagent, and Huntert(2) described a method based upon the reaction between the diazotized sulf anilic acid and ergothioneine. But these procedures seemed to be unsatisfactory, so in 1947 we devised a new methodt(3) based upon the conversion of the sulfur of ergothionein...

A new test for ergothioneine upon which is based a method for its estimation in simple solution and in blood-filtrates.

TANRET [1909] isolated from ergot of rye a base which he termed ergothioneine, which was shown by Barger and Ewins [1911] to be the betaine of thiolhistidine. There is no further record of the occurrence of ergothioneine in the plant or animal kingdom until the isolation of a substance from blood by Hunter and Eagles [1925, 1927], which has recently been shown by Eagles and Johnson [1927] to be...
